The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations defines esprit de l'escalier as, "An untranslatable phrase, the meaning of which is that one only thinks on one's way downstairs of the smart retort one might have made in the drawing room."

I completely agree with your mom's philosophy of gravy boats. First of all, the actual gravy boats are cool. I've got three different ones I use on my table when I have a crowd over for dinner. Secondly, what doesn't taste better when covered in gravy? lol. Gravy is definitely falls into the "comfort food" category.
